Making Appliances Last
Most premature appliance deaths come from a handful of avoidable things, and nearly all of them are about airflow, water and voltage.

- Blocked airflow is the most common cause of early failure across every appliance type.
- Hard water quietly destroys washing machines, heaters and dishwashers.
- Voltage fluctuation kills electronics; protection is cheap relative to the appliance.
- Cleaning filters is the highest-value maintenance task and the most neglected.
Appliances rarely fail because a part wore out on schedule. They fail because something made them work harder than they were designed to, for years.
Airflow
Every cooling appliance rejects heat somewhere, and every one of them fails early if it cannot.
- Refrigerators need clearance behind and above. Pushed flat against a wall in a hot kitchen corner, the compressor runs longer and hotter, and dies sooner. Clean the condenser coils at the back occasionally β dust is an insulator.
- Air conditioners need an unobstructed outdoor unit. Enclosing it in a cabinet or letting plants grow around it is the same mistake.
- Washing machines and dryers need their vents and filters clear.
Water
Hard water is the quiet killer in much of India. Scale builds on heating elements and in valves, insulating them so they run hotter, then eventually blocking them.
If your area has hard water, descale on a schedule rather than waiting for a symptom. A washing machine that takes noticeably longer to heat is already scaled.
Voltage
Fluctuation and surges destroy control boards, which on a modern appliance is often a repair costing a large fraction of the machineβs value.
A stabiliser for large appliances β particularly air conditioners and refrigerators in areas with unreliable supply β costs a small fraction of the appliance and prevents the failure mode that is most expensive to fix.
Filters
The single highest-value maintenance task, and the most neglected. A clogged AC filter forces the unit to work harder for less cooling, raising both your bill and the wear on the compressor. Cleaning one takes minutes.
Same principle for washing machine lint filters and vacuum filters.
Loading and use
- Do not overload a washing machine; it stresses bearings, which are expensive.
- Do not leave a fridge door open while deciding.
- Let hot food cool before refrigerating.
- Run appliances at sensible settings rather than maximum by default.
When to repair and when to replace
A rough test: if the repair costs more than about half a new appliance and the machine is past two-thirds of its expected life, replacing is usually better β particularly if efficiency standards have moved on since you bought it. Put both options through the running cost calculator before deciding; an old inefficient machine can cost more to keep than to replace.
